ということで、今回はグッとシュミに走りまして、新選組の生き残り、
永倉新八の足跡を辿ってみたいと思います。

新選組の二番隊組長を努めた永倉新八は沖田総司・斎藤一などを
差し置いて最も腕が立つと言われていた剣豪であり、そのがむしゃらな
性格から「がむしん（がむしゃらな新八、の意）」という渾名がついていた
など、キャラクター的に非常に魅力的なため、様々なフィクションで
描かれることも多い人物なのですが、新選組が消滅し時代が明治に
移ってもなお生き残り続け、晩年は北海道小樽市に居を構えて
家族に囲まれつつひっそり余生を過ごしていたというのは、意外と
知られていない事実なのではないでしょうか。

ここでざっくり永倉新八について解説しますと、彼はもともと松前藩の
出身で、江戸の松前藩上屋敷で生まれました。
幼少期から神道無念流の道場で腕を磨き、18歳で本目録まで
上り詰めますが、剣術好きが昂じて同年脱藩、親族に迷惑がかからない
ようにと長倉姓を永倉と改め、剣術修行で各地を渡り歩いた果てに
近藤勇が道場主を務める天然理心流「試衛館」の食客となります。

その後、清河八郎の発案による浪士組に近藤らと共に参加。
近藤・芹沢らが清河と袂を分かち壬生浪士組から新選組となるに
至って永倉もその腕を買われ、撃剣師範および二番組組長を
努めるなど隊の中核を担う存在になっていきました。

その後有名な池田屋事件を始め、慶応4年の鳥羽伏見の戦いまで、
持ち前の豪胆さで獅子奮迅の働きをしましたが、新政府軍の勢いには
勝てず、甲州の戦いで敗れ江戸に退却後近藤と袂を分かち、同じく
新選組の食客組であった原田左之助と共に靖兵隊を結成し各地で
転戦を重ねますが、会津藩の降伏を知って江戸へと帰還。
ここで数年間反政府勢力としての決起を模索しつつ潜伏生活を
続けていたようですが、結局望みは叶わず、明治４年に松前藩医である
杉村松柏の娘と結婚し、婿養子として松前に渡ります。

北海道に渡ってからの永倉新八ですが、明治6年には家督を相続して
杉村義衛（よしえ）と改名し、松前から小樽に移り住みます。

その後は樺戸集治監（かばとしゅうじかん・現在の空知地方）で看守に
剣術指導を行ったり東京牛込で剣術道場を開いたりと各地を転々と
しますが、明治32年になって再度小樽へ転居、その後亡くなるまで
この地で過ごしました。

明治期に永倉はいくつか手記的な文章を残していますが、小樽新聞
による聞き取り取材をまとめた「新撰組顛末記」は幕末の生き残りによる
リアルな証言で、当時世間からは「悪の人斬り集団」として認識されていた
新選組のイメージを覆し、後の歴史研究やフィクション等に多大な影響を
及ぼしています。

老人になってからは楽隠居として家族に囲まれ幸福な日常を
過ごしていたようですが、
「常に仕込み杖を持ち歩いていた」
「地元のヤクザに絡まれるもひと睨みで退散させた」
といった有名なエピソードも（本当かどうかはさておき）多く残されており、
やはり単なる隠居老人とは一味違う印象を受けますね。

個人的には永倉が後年映画を好み「近藤、土方は若くして死んでしまったが、
自分は命永らえたおかげでこのような文明の不思議を見る事ができた」と
語っていたというエピソードが好きです。

歴史の分岐点に置いて華々しく散る宿命の人間もいれば、そこで
起きた出来事を後世に物語る役割を担わされた人間というのもまた
存在するのだろうな、などと考えてみたり。

永倉新八（杉村義衛）は、大正4年(1915)1月5日、小樽にて
その波乱に満ちた人生の幕を下ろしました。享年77歳。

晩年は、敵も味方も含め戊辰戦争で死んだ全ての者のために
毎日仏壇に向かい手を合わせていたといいます。

The Shinsengumi (meaning “the new squad”) was a special police force organized by the
Bakufu (military government) during Japan’s Bakumatsu period (late shogun) in 1864.
It was active until 1869.

It was founded to protect the Shogunate representatives in Kyoto at a time when a controversial imperial edict to exclude foreign trade from Japan had been made and the Choshu clan had been forced from the imperial court.
Although the Shinsengumi are lauded as brave and determined heroes in popular culture, they have been described by historians as a “ruthless murdering death squad”.

Shinpachi Nagakura who was the second team leader of the Shinsengumi has been known as a great swordsman.

In general, He has been said to surpass Soji Okita and Hajime Saito, which are known as the adept.

For he had very attractive characters, he was drawn in a fiction or movie, comic by many peoples in later years.

However, Shinpachi had survived in age of Meiji, and his later years had spent the rest of his life quietly in Otaru of Hokkaido.
I think it is the fact that is not so much known.

to explain to the rough about Shinpachi Nagakura.

He was originally a native of Matsumae clan in hokkaido,
He was born in yashiki of Matsumae clan in Edo.

brush the arm in swordsmanship dojo of “Shinto Munen Ryu” from a young age, and he get the “Menkyo kaiden(=Initiation into the secrets)” at the age of 18.

but, the same year Shinpachi leave the clan and go to the various places in For swordplay training.

Before long, he will be guest (and teacher) of “Shieikan” that is the dojo of “Tennen Rishin Ryu” that is Isami Kondo serve as a Master.

After that, Shinsengumi was organized as a director of Kondo,
Nagakura also become the core of the Shinsengumi as second team leader.

Beginning to the famous ikedaya incident, to Battle of Toba Fushimi,
Shinpachi worked furiously with the innate bravery.

However, the momentum of the new government forces was very strong. Shinsengumi was defeated at the Battle of Koshu.
After the retreat to Edo, Shinpachi had the disagreement with Kondo.
And he left the Shinsengumi.

After that has been gone through fights in many places, Shinpachi was informed the surrender of the Aizu clan, and he returned to Edo.

Shinpachi Nagakura married the daughter of Sugimura Shohaku who was Matsumae clan physician in 1871, and he was moved to Matsumae (hokkaido) as a Son-in-law of Sugimura family.

after moved to Hokkaido,Shinpachi Nagakura inherited the family estate in 1873.
He renamed to Yoshie Sugimura, and moved to Otaru from Matsumae.

After that, he teach the swordsmanship to the jailer in Kabat prison,
and back to Tokyo and opened the Swordplay Dojo in Ushigome.
however, 1899 to again move to Otaru, and he spent the rest of his life in this town until death .

Shinpachi Nagakura had left some memoirs in the Meiji era ,
Especially, “Shinsengumi Detailed Report” that is the summary of interview by Otaru Newspaper was a realistic testimony that survived the end of the Edo period.
it overturned the image of Shinsengumi that has been recognized from the society as the “Ruthless murdering death squad”, and It had a profound influence on the historical research and fiction after.

1915 January 5,
Shinpachi Nagakura (Yoshie Sugimura) lowered the curtain of life that was eventful in Otaru.
He was 77 years old.

His later years,Shinpachi has been told to as was praying toward the altar every day for all human (including enemy) beings who died in the Boshin War.
