実際に乗れる車両は「アイアンホース号」と言い、博物館に展示
されている「しづか号」と同じポーター社製で、1909年にアメリカで
製造された、相当に年季の入った車両です。

ちなみに100年以上前の蒸気機関車で動態保存されているのは、
国内ではこのアイアンホース号だけ、その上現存するテンダー式
蒸気機関車の中でも世界一古いという話もあり、こんな場末の（失礼）
博物館で乗れるというのが何だか不思議な感じがします（笑）

運行は、博物館外の展示スペースにある「中央駅」から端っこの
「手宮駅」までの約４００ｍをおおよそ8分ほどで運転。
手宮駅にある転車台でぐるっと一回転して、また中央駅に戻ってくる
という大体20分ほどの工程です。

ちなみにアイアンホース号の運行は2時間おきに１日3回。
特に料金はかからず、入館料のみで搭乗できます。
鉄道ファンのみならず、子供を連れていったりデートで
行ったりしても結構楽しめるのではないでしょうか。

総合博物館はかつて「鉄道記念館」という国鉄が運営している
施設でしたが、その後民営化して交通記念館という名称となり、
平成１９年に小樽市博物館と小樽市青少年科学技術館の機能を
統合して「総合博物館」という名称に落ち着いたという経緯があります。
もともとが鉄道関連の施設だったこともあり、鉄道関連、とりわけ
SL系の資料が異常に充実しているのが特徴です。

エントランス手前には北海道鉄道の父、アメリカ人鉄道技師・
ジョセフ・ユーリー・クロフォードの銅像があります。

建物自体も全体的に駅舎の雰囲気で、チケット売り場も昔の改札を
イメージさせます。入場料は大人400円ですが、小樽市内の他の施設、
第２博物館や小樽郵船、手宮洞窟などをまとめて観覧できるフリーパス
が500円で購入できますので、小樽をあちこち観光して回るならこっちの
方がお得かもしれません。

施設内に入り、まず目に入るのがSL「しずか号」。
ちょっとマニアックな話になりますが、これは”国鉄7100形蒸気機関車”
という、1880年にアメリカから輸入された北海道初の蒸気機関車のうちの
１台で、全国でも8両しか配備されていない鉄道黎明期の貴重な車両です。

北海道で初めて鉄道が開通したのがここ手宮なのですが、その際に
導入された北海道発の蒸気機関車義經（義経）号と辨慶（弁慶）号の
同機種で、1882年に札幌ー幌内線が増設された際に増備されたのが、
この「しづか号」ということです。
ちなみに「しづか」という名称は義経の奥さんの名前ですね。

8台のうちほとんどが解体されてしまった状況で、義経とこのしづか
のみが1952年に復元され、義経は関西の博物館、しづかはここ小樽総合
博物館にそれぞれ収まるということで現在に至っております。

In a situation where most of the JNR 7100 form steam locomotives had been dismantled, “Yoshitsune” and “Shizuka” has been restored in 1952.

Currently, “Yoshitsune” has been exhibited in the Museum of the Kansai region, and “Shizuka” has been exhibited here, Otaru City General Museum.
